Sea Ranch Abalone Bay Remodel Update

Remodel Update for  Sea Ranch Abalone

With travel restrictions in place for Sonoma County and California, we have not traveled to Sea Ranch to check on the remodel progress for Abalone Bay. However, our contractor, John Seed of Apple Construction informs me that work continues on.  He completed the exterior staining of our house last week. Gone is the fresh wood look. In its place, the defining color of weathered wood that defines the palette of Sea Ranch on the coast.

By the looks of the photos sent to us by our neighbors, it looks great!

John Seed smooths the foundation for the new wall, replacing the garage door.

The garage conversion also is progressing well. We added heating to the new game room space with an upgraded heating system. I am happy to announce that we passed the Home Energy Rating System (HERS) testing that examined our home’s energy efficiency. Also installed is an on-demand water system. This unit is located to the left of the nook framing our window-seat bench.

From Living Room to Drying Room

Previously our living room was converted into John’s construction woodworking shop.

Now it’s doubling as a drying room for the 360 lineal feet of 1×6 verticle grain Douglas fir that will cover the walls of the window seat.

Living room as a drying room for boards

He just completed the third coat of finish on all the material, sanding in between each coat.

Our contractor has moved on to priming and painting all the plywood that goes on underneath the Douglas fir.  Next up, John will build the blind doors for access to the furnace and on-demand water heater.

Labor Intensive Work While Short-handed

We are so very appreciative of all the very labor-intensive work John’s done. It’s been even a greater challenge for him, given his assistant must remain sheltered-in-place.  Hopefully, by next week or so, he’ll have everything on the window seat walls. And with luck, his assistant can be released back to work.

So right now we are down to the finish-work with mitered corners on most the boards installed.

Next Up

After the window seat is completed John will start on the sliding barn door, another very complicated piece of our remodel’s finish work. When all completed it should be really awesome!

It’s Like Christmas!

Packages arrive

While we wait for the construction in the house to be completed, packages are stacking up in our personal home. We have new TVs ready to go, new fluffy pillows, linens, and many other amenities lining up in our home’s living room. I can’t wait to take them to Abalone Bay!
