Labor Day Weekend Events: The Sea Ranch and Mendonoma Area

April 29, 2019 by Donna Martinez 2 Comments

LABOR DAY WEEKEND EVENTS IN THE SEA RANCH

How will you be able to choose which of the many Labor Day Weekend Events you will attend? It’s a weekend perfect for the art lover and those who love the outdoors. With so many interesting, lively and festive events on The Sea Ranch and Mendonoma area for your enjoyment, you may just have to plan to extend your stay!

22nd Annual Sea Ranch Circumambulation

When: Saturday, August 31. The hike begins promptly at 8:00 a.m.
Where: Register at Moonraker Recreation Center at 7:45 a.m.;
The entire course is about 21 miles; hike any part of it or the whole thing.
What: Explore and celebrate the varied environments on The Sea Ranch, meet old friends and make new ones. Sponsored by the Trails Committee.

What is The Sea Ranch Circumambulation?

The route of 20.35 miles follows most of the perimeter of The Sea Ranch through forests, hillside, and ocean meadows and along the Bluff Trail. The “Circ” starts promptly at 8:00 a.m. from the Moonraker Recreation Center. Please arrive to register before 7:45 a.m. Circ T-shirts or hoodies may be ordered before the start, payable by cash or check (the shirts will be available a few weeks after the event). Route maps will be provided. Although water and juice will be provided at rest stops, it’s a good idea to carry some water. Please wear hiking shoes, adequate sunscreen, and a hat.

You Don’t Have to Hike it All

The Circumambulation is divided into four segments, with three rest stops where water, juice, homemade cookies, and restroom facilities will be available. You can choose to ambulate any of the segments, but this year we are introducing the Half Circ which can be completed on either the north or southbound legs. Vehicles will be available at the three rest stops to drive ambulators back to their starting point. A guide will lead out from Moonraker, directional arrows and mileage markers will be in place along the route, and a sweep will follow the group to ensure no one is left behind.

Rest Stops

The first rest stop is in the Chapel parking lot after 5.78 miles of mainly hilly, forest terrain. Parking is limited here and may be needed for other events later, so it is advisable to have someone drop you off if this is your chosen start point. For those starting from this point, please arrive by 9:15 a.m.

The second stop is at Gualala Point Regional Park, in the large parking area after 4.91 miles of flatter meadows and forests. You may bring a sack lunch marked with your name, leave it with us at your starting point, and we will transport it to the Park. If you join the hike at the Park, please arrive by 11:30 a.m. (Remember you must pay for parking, or have a Sonoma County Regional Parks park pass).

The third and fourth segments are along the Bluff Trail; the third rest stop is at the end of Dune Drift Close after 4.18 miles of flat bluff trail. If you wish to begin at Dune Drift, please arrive by 1:30 p.m.

Return to Moonraker Recreation Center

The fourth segment continues south along the Bluff Trail to Trail Post #3. At that point the route turns left, away from the Bluff Trail, to return to the Moonraker Recreation Center, another 5.48 miles of flat hiking, to complete the 20.35 mile Circumambulation! Please check in at the registration table, which will be staffed from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. (or until the last hiker finishes, whichever comes first)

Pot-Luck Celebration Dinner

All ambulators are invited to join the Trails Committee at our annual post-ambulation celebration potluck dinner.

The Trails Committee Goal

Our goal for the Circ is to provide The Sea Ranch members and guests with a unique experience and chance to explore and celebrate the varied environments on TSR. It’s an opportunity to become better acquainted with the trails system, meet old friends, and make new ones.

Annual Equestrian Center Open House

When: Sunday 9/1.  10:00 a.m. to noon
Where: at the Equestrian Center.
What: Children and adults are welcome to visit the stables, view horsemanship exhibitions in the main arena, learn about horse care and grooming, and enjoy treats.  Carrots for horses will be provided.  Please join us!  Sponsored by the Stables Advisory Committee.

You are cordially invited to attend our Equestrian Center Open House on Labor Day weekend.

The Sea Ranch Equestrian Center hosts a yearly Open House during Labor Day weekend. The center frequently showcases a variety of riding disciplines in the arena including Western, Hunter Jumper/Dressage, Endurance, and Natural Horsemanship. Meanwhile, in the barn area, excited children feed excited horses all the carrots they could manage. Games include roping a”steer”, horseshoes, and bobbing for apples. Equipment and types of feed were displayed. Each year, the horse owners add new activities for the visitors to enjoy. Of course, treats for visitors are provided, too.
