For the last 4 years California has suffered a very hard drought that has imposed strict water rationing. But now all the weather channels are a buzz with news that this year’s El Niño will bring us buckets of rain!

While the jury is still out as to whether El Niño 2015-2016 will replenish California’s parched earth or not, it certainly gives us hope that we’ll be able to put a dent in it.
In fact we can’t wait to celebrate rainy days at Sea Ranch!

“BUT WAIT A MINUTE!!” I can hear you all cry. “What if that prayed-for-rain falls while we’re vacationing at The Sea Ranch?”
You’re probably envisioning fearfully that your vacation photos will look very much like this one >>>
Well worry no more! We have collected 5 ways you, your guests, and your children can celebrate rainy days at Sea Ranch, making it one of your most enjoyable holidays ever.
How to Celebrate Rainy Days at Sea Ranch
1. Sing along with your favorite celebratory rain songs
Here are a couple of our favorites- a new one: Sidney Samson & Eva Simons – Celebrate The Rain
And of course our old time favorite: Singing in the Rain.
Other options for a rainy day musical interlude that also include a great meal
But if singing to a video is not your thing, then perhaps listening to live music will lift your spirits and help you celebrate rainy days in Sea Ranch.
Our Mendonoma region has many family friendly venues that provide music. We suggest you give them a call or check their venue calendar to see if there’s a rainy day party going on at one of them.
You may also want to consider having a celebratory dinner and drinks there as well!

2. Celebrate like a duck

But do be careful in case the rain includes lightening.

Then after your walk, enjoy a leisurely soak in the hot tub. Many vacation rentals, like Abalone Bay, provide not only the hot tub, but also spa towels. And since you’ll be wet anyway what better way to warm up if the El Niño rains are chilly?
3. Celebrate rainy days at Sea Ranch with a hot toddy

Cuddle together by the fire. Sip a cup of tea or cocoa. Or perhaps you’d prefer to convert that tea into a hot toddy by adding a splash of rum, whiskey, or brandy. Top it off with organic honey purchased locally in Gualala at the Surf Market or Gualala Super and you’re set for a relaxing libation to toast the rising water tables.
We suggest reading a good book as you sip your toddy. Did you remember to bring a favorite book to read? If not you’ll often find books available at your Sea Ranch vacation rental. Frequently found are travel guides, short novels, and even read aloud books for the kids. At you’ll find a wide selection of books, many of which are listed in our Pinterest site, Books for Vacation Reading.
4. Make a celebratory feast of rainy day comfort food
Is there a chef or a baker in your party? You and the kids delight in the aromas emanating from the oven as gooey chocolate chips indicate their rainy day cookies are ready. Or perhaps you bake a loaf of fresh bread and serve it with steamy soup made from local produce found in Gualala.
If cooking simply is your perferance then a crock-pot dish will do the trick. The well equipped vacation rental will offer a variety of cookbooks to help you fashioning your culinary delights. At Abalone Bay you’ll find cookbooks of all kinds including cookbooks for:
- Kid’s
- Cheesecake
- Crockpots
- Vegetarian/Gluten Free
- Fish and abalone
As your meal is slowly cooking, you enjoy a game of cards, Scrabble, checkers or chess. Or perhaps watch a movie either selected from the collection of DVDs found at your vacation rental or from the cable service provided. You’ll find both options available and a 60″ HDTV to watch it on.
For a more traditional theatre experience you’ll want to visit the Arena Theater, in Point Arena, about 15 minutes north of Sea Ranch (214 Main, Point Arena, CA 95468| Phone:+1 707-882-3272). The theater has had many reincarnations. First in 1929 as a vaudeville playhouse, it later was equipped for showing motion pictures. From 1995 to 1997, the theatre was retrofitted for earth-quake safety and rebuilt into the extraordinary gem it is today. When not showing movies, they offer live events. Check their calendar of events here.
5. Celebrate rainy days at Sea Ranch with a well deserved nap

You may find that you want to take a celebratory nap when all is done. The pitter patter of the rain from El Niño becomes your lullaby as you slip into a relaxing slumber.
Now that’s a fabulous way to enjoy and celebrate the rain!
You awaken from your deep slumber refreshed, ready to continue on with your celebration. You discover that the meadow grasses have turned from dusty brown to a luscious green.
You close the day thankful that the parched earth has been nourished.
